چکیده

Establishing local consistency is one of the main algorithmic techniques in temporal and spatial reasoning. A central question for the various proposed temporal and spatial constraint languages is whether local consistency implies global consistency. Showing that a constraint language Γ has this “local-to-global” property implies polynomial-time tractability of the constraint language, and has further pleasant algorithmic consequences. In the present paper, we study the “local-to-global” property by making use of a recently established connection of this property with universal algebra. Roughly speaking, the connection shows that this property is equivalent to the presence of a so-called quasi nearunanimity polymorphism of the constraint language. We obtain new algorithmic results and give very concise proofs of previously known theorems. Our results concern well-known and heavily studied formalisms such as the point algebra and its extensions, Allen’s interval algebra, and the spatial reasoning language RCC-5.

SparQ - A Spatial Reasoning Toolbox

SparQ is a toolbox for qualitative spatial reasoning. Interpreting reasoning in a broad sense, SparQ covers mapping information from quantitative to qualitative, applying constraint reasoning to qualitative information, reasoning about calculi, and mapping qualitative information back to the quantitative domain. The toolbox is designed for extensibility and released under the GNU GPL public lic...

Using Orientation Information for Qualitative Spatial Reasoning

A new approach to representing qualitative spatial knowledge and to spatial reasoning is presented. This approach is motivated by cognitive considerations and is based on relative orientation information about spatial environments. The approach aims at exploiting properties of physical space which surface when the spatial knowledge is structured according to conceptual neighborhood of spatial r...

Qualitative Spatio-Temporal Stream Reasoning with Unobservable Intertemporal Spatial Relations Using Landmarks

Qualitative spatio-temporal reasoning is an active research area in Artificial Intelligence. In many situations there is a need to reason about intertemporal qualitative spatial relations, i.e. qualitative relations between spatial regions at different time-points. However, these relations can never be explicitly observed since they are between regions at different time-points. In applications ...

Qualitative constraint satisfaction problems: An extended framework with landmarks

Dealing with spatial and temporal knowledge is an indispensable part of almost all aspects of human activity. The qualitative approach to spatial and temporal reasoning, known as Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning (QSTR), typically represents spatial/temporal knowledge in terms of qualitative relations (e.g., to the east of, after), and reasons with spatial/temporal knowledge by solving...

Analyzing Qualitative Spatio-Temporal Calculi using Algebraic Geometry

Qualitative spatial reasoning is based on calculi which comprise relations and operation tables that encode operations like relation composition. Designing a calculus involves determining these tables and analyzing reasoning properties—a demanding task that is susceptible to errors if performed manually. This paper is concerned with automating computation of operation tables and analysis of qua...
